Brazos Bend Aviary

Learning from the living landscape.

Inspired by the leaves and plant life of Brazos Bend, the aviary pairs a light, organic enclosure with spaces for education and wildlife care. A second-level observation deck brings visitors closer to the canopy. The physical model studies the relationship between the enclosure, planted habitat, and visitor movement.

Model making becomes a way to investigate the enclosure, the scale of the planting, and the experience of moving through the habitat. The indoor program includes an animal clinic, gallery, auditorium, and supporting spaces.
